This website provides access to a free, interactive platform for tracking Constitutional Court statistics. The site aims to:
As a pilot project, the site currently presents data for the period 2010 to 2019. In due course, the site will be updated to include more recent statistics.
This initiative is based on a research project coordinated by Nurina Ally and Leo Boonzaier (researchers at the Faculty of Law, University of Cape Town). In collaboration with UCT's Centre for Law and Society and the iNtaka Centre for Law and Technology, they worked with data scientist, Neil Du Toit, to establish this platform. Justin Winchester, a former UCT law student and teaching assistant, provided invaluable assistance with gathering relevant data for the 2010-2019 period.
The statistics tool is interactive and dynamic. Dropdown boxes allow users to select the judges, topics or rights that are of interest to them. Unanimous decisions can also be excluded when assessing trends in authorship and agreement rates. The judgments included in the results can be accessed by clicking on each of the graph's bars. A list of judgments captured in the results will appear below the graph.
The aim of this pilot is to showcase how this data collection tool and platform can be used to advance empirical research on courts and case law. While every effort has been made to present accurate and reliable data, we welcome feedback on possible errors. Researchers interested in finding out more about the project, or collaborating on further research can direct queries to the Centre for Law and Society (pbl-cls@uct.ac.za).
